Why Is Brain Injuries Related To Car Accidents?

Although brain injuries can be classified as either open or closed, all brain injuries have serious consequences for victims. The brain is sensitive and can be affected by any injury.

Traumatic brain injuries can be described as any type of sudden, permanent damage to the brain that is caused by any force to the head. Traumatic brain injuries can be caused by physical attacks, sports-related injuries and slip and fall accidents. A mild concussion can lead to permanent brain damage, paralysis or permanent disability. Traumatic brain injuries may also cause severe brain injury.

Traumatic brain injuries are permanent. Most victims of severe traumatic brain injury will experience cognitive, behavioral, and physical changes. Damage to the limbic system may cause emotional regulation to be affected.

Brain Injuries: Categories

  • Hematoma –  Blood Clots are caused by blood vessels that have been ruptured. When blood is leaking from the bloodstream it becomes thicker and starts clotting. The human body uses clotting to stop bleeding.
  • Traumatic Subarachnoid Death – Subarachnoid hemorhages are found in the area around the brain. This area is home to cerebrospinal fluid, which protects the brain. Traumatic subarachnoid hemorhage occurs when tiny arteries burst and cause head injuries. The brain’s surface is affected by the blood leaking from the head.
  • Penetration Injuries– A penetration injury occurs when an object enters the brain and punctures the skull.
  • Axonal diffuse injuries – Structures in the brain can be damaged by sudden, violent movements of the head and neck. Axonal diffuse injuries can be seen in both mild and severe concussions.
  • Coup Contrecoup Injuries A coup-contrecoup injury is an object that penetrates one side of the brain, and then exits the brain on the other side.
  • Contusions A contusion is an injury to the brain that results in the swelling and bruising. Sometimes contusions can become more severe and may need to be removed surgically.
  • Concussions Many people who are injured in motor vehicle accidents suffer from concussions. Concussions can be caused by any kind of impact or sudden movement to the brain.

A brain injury can have a profound impact on every area of a person’s life. A brain injury can cause permanent impairments in an individual’s ability and capacity to perform daily activities. A concussion can lead to memory loss, cognitive decline, or emotional dysregulation.
