What are the Common Complications of Brain Injuries?

A person may feel subtle or severe changes in their ability or the ability to communicate and take care of their own brains after an accident.

Each traumatic brain injury (TBI), is unique and can have life-altering consequences and symptoms. TBIs can cause a variety of problems, but the majority can be divided into three main categories:

  • Cognitive problems- When parts of the brain that are responsible for cognition get injured, victims may experience difficulty with memory, learning, reasoning, and communication, such as difficulties understanding speech or writing.
  • Behavior problems –TBI victims might behave differently after their accident. They might have trouble with self-control, lose behavioral awareness, or engage risky behaviors. They may also experience rapid emotional changes, including anxiety, depression, and anger.
  • Other physical problems – Since the brain is involved in so many bodily functions, TBI victims may experience a variety of symptoms. They might experience nerve damage, especially in their eyes and facial muscles. Additionally, they could have difficulty with their senses including blurred vision, altered taste, ringing or balancing, blurred vision, and problems keeping their balance.

TBIs can cause severe brain damage, which can lead to altered consciousness and even death.
